The Wedding is Canceled

Posted on by

broken engagementThe big split this week between Caroline Wozniacki and Rory McIlroy has everyone talking. Of course, people love gossip and always want to know more. The two are being discreet in their responses in spite of being so large in the public eye. Calling off the wedding raises the question of what to do when the wedding is canceled and the invitations have already been sent out. The answer is  clear:

  • You send out notes or cards to all the would-be guests advising them that the wedding is canceled. These should be printed on a quality card stock. In the case of Wozniacki and McIIroy it would seem unnecessary since the break-up is practically front page news. Nevertheless it is the right thing to do.
  • You return any gifts that have been received, including a short handwritten note. There is no need to go into a long explanation about what happened. This, in essence,  is something of a thank you note, but with an unhappy twist.
  • The bride-to-be must return the ring. No doubt, there will be another one on her finger in the future.
  • You notify all the vendors you have hired as quickly as possible.
  • You speak as little as possible about the break up and move on with your life.

If you were among those invited, wish each party well and refrain from prying into their business. Don’t ask questions, but listen if they want to talk.
