Holiday Tipping in Tough Times
During this holiday season when everyone except the super wealthy is watching his pennies, tipping has become a big issue. It is not so much a question of whether to tip or not but more of how much to tip and whom. The rules for tipping in restaurants still apply so for the purpose of this article I will not repeat the tried and true on that subject. I'll revisit the topic in an upcoming blog.
Meanwhile it is still important to tip those people who serve you all year long from the doorman in your home or office building to the people who care for your pets or deliver your mail.
The rule to remember is not to put your own budget in jeopardy. This may be a time when you cannot show the same generosity you have in the past. You may only be able to offer half the amount of the cash tip you gave last year. Instead of cash, you might choose to give a home baked item. Cookies don't spend like dollar bills, but your thoughtfulness will be noted. In some cases you may only be comfortable sending a note of appreciation.
This year it may be the thought that counts. If your financial situation improves during the coming months, you may consider offering that tip in celebration of another holiday.
To sum it up:
- Safeguard yourself.
- Give cash if you can.
- If you can't manage the cash, a homemade item shows appreciation and effort.
- Handwritten thank you notes demonstrate that you sincerely care.
